Groove Lineage Farewell To Hobgoblin-Angel-N1 (Obituary);..And The Next GL Chapter begins…

Groove Lineage at Hobgoblin-Angel-N1, 2007-2011,   R.I.P

Obituary

Just a few words for those who hadn’t all ready heard – I / we Groove Lineage, Keep The Faith Events, Ns3fS, Soul Fridays quit Hobgoblin-Angel-N1 a few weeks ago – So please remember – there will be no further KTF, Groove Lineage, NS3Fs Events at Hobgoblin-Angel-N1 for til further notice.

At the start of 2011 new staff & management took over the venue, in brief things did not go well from there. We tried to make a go of it, & tried to point things in the right direction but after exhausting all efforts, long deliberation, receiving  feedback from Groove Lineage & Hobgoblin-N1 regulars & considering the ever changing circumstances at the venue – the general consensus was the venue was no longer a place suitable for our Soul friendly events.

I love the place, it’s a great building & couple of rooms, but it’s the people who make the events & that has to start & lead from the staff outwards as hosts to the customers & attendees. It was felt the current vibe is not right place for our Soul fam, perhaps in time things may change & we may return under new staff & management, but for now we must follow our hearts & instincts as events hosts to a different home for the Groove Lineage events.

Groove Lineage started out as a radio show & then became an event, a live show, it has been on in various venue’s across London before it landed at the Hob in N1. The stint at Hobgoblin-N1 was it’s longest, regular show run to date. As is usual in this biz of show during it’s whole stint at the Hob it existed ‘on a promise’, but turned out to be one of the longest running weekly Soul events London had seen.

We had some great nights there, I am proud of what we put on there & what we achieved & what was cultivated during those events & what we nurtured culturally.  I learnt a lot there & it definitely allowed me to grow & experiment with many event, DJ set & performance ideas.

Special thanks goes to former manager Liam who supported & facilitated, and most importantly believed in much of what I did there & allowed me to carry out my Eclectic Soul vision week in week out there.

Big thanks also to the members of staff who worked with me week in week out too.

I have fond memories for some special events inc. NeoSoul3rdFridays, Roots2ndFridays, Soca vs Salsa, The Prince ‘Purple Soul’ nights, Fela nights, Marvin, Curtis, Bobby Womack, Roy Ayers & Style Council themes, When Lovers Rock met Motown nights, NYE The Soul Way, Obama-bration  celebration nights, Help A Hero nights, UKSoulOrg annual party nights, the release parties for Erykah Badu, Sade, Dwele, Erro, JSoul, Carmen Rodgers – just some of the great special events that went on there.

I play every gig as if it’s my last & inevitably the last gig has to come there too, nothing is for ever – which is why I say attend & enjoy these gigs while they are on.

I had a good run there, I am thankful – thanks to all who were involved in that classic  Groove Lineage at Hobgoblin era.

But it’s not quite all over just yet…

As one door closes another opens…

The Rebirth

Groove Lineage Logo 1

We have some great gigs lined up for the remainder of this year – at time of writing 2011 – our Jazz Cafe gigs run as usual & we have some special gigs for Groove Lineage lined up to play around London.

First up – our flagship NeoSoul night – London’s longest running Neo Soul night ‘NS3Fs’ aka “NeoSoul3rdFridays” is now ‘NS1S’ – “NeoSoul1stSaturdays” & it returns to London N1 & a brand, sparkling new venue! – Madam Chi, Upper St, N1.

The first date at the new venue is Sat May 7th – see our gig listings or other posts on this site for more details – all enquires – as ever – please email keepthefaithful@gmail.com & Email to join the mailing list so you know when the next Groove Lineage & KTF events will be happening.

Thanks for keeping the faith all,

See you back in N1 on May 7th 2011 at Madam Chi, Upper St, N1 – same tempo, different venue… ;0)

Yours in the Groove Lineage

Lime Mag, London’s Cultural, Entertainment Radar.. | Paul Aaaron Interview, KTF’ Groove Lineage’, ‘NS1S’ “NeoSoul1stSaturdays” features in Lime Magazine

A big thanks & recognition to Lime Magazine for their continued support & coverage of  quality entertainment found in London, essential reading for men & women of culture in London town.

The brain child of journalist Sophia Jackson, previously Entertainments editor at New Nation newspaper & also In Living Colour Magazine.

This era gets tougher & tougher for those still in the physical print game so to come out with a brand new title like “Lime Mag” & make a great success of it is a great achievement.

You can pick up a copy of Lime Mag each month in print across London for £2 a copy or read it online via their website here:

http://www.comelime.com

Here is this month of May 2011 edition, “The Wedding Issue” to read online:  http://issuu.com/limemag/docs/may_lime_2011/1

Big thanks to Lime Mag for featuring our ‘NS1S’ “NeoSoul1stSaturdays” event on their front cover for their May 2011 edition. Here’s the front cover:

& in this month’s, May 2011 edition you will find a preview of our KTF’ Groove Lineage’ “NeoSoul1stSaturdays” ‘NS1S’ launch event happening at Madam Chi, 187 Upper St, Islington, London, N1 1RQ, along with many more great fashion, cultural, theatre, social & musical tips within. Big thanks to Lime Mag for making our ‘NS1S’ “NeoSoul1stSaturdays” event their “club event of the month” – read the preview in May 2011 edition on page 31 online or in your printed copy – here is the article below:

Take a look at Sophia’s London theatre site   http://www.afridiziak.com also.

Lime Mag did an interview with NS1S, Keep The Faith & Groove Lineage’s Paul Aaaron back in February 2011, you can read the interview online via this link: http://www.comelime.com/interviews/feb2011/paul-aaaron.html

The info in the interview was correct at time of writing – though we, KTF no longer do events at Hob-N1, although the Jazz Cafe gigs are still running as stated.

Smiley Culture, UK Reggae Pioneer R.I.P.. The Mysterious Death Of Smiley Culture… | Lime Mag Tribute

On March 15th 2011 we lost one a very influencial, founding artist from our UK music & UK Reggae scene.

Smiley Culture died whilst in suspicious circumstances whilst in police custody at his home on March 15th 2011.

The mission & search for justice and answers regarding what happened on that fateful day continues.

Smiley Culture’s family continue to campaign for a conclusive & credible explanation to how his death came about. They are also using the campaign to highlight suspicious deaths in police custody in general in the UK.

You can get updates on their campaign – “Justice For Smiley Culture” via their official net pages on Facebook at: https://www.facebook.com/Campaign4Justice4SmileyCulture

& on Twitter at:  http://twitter.com/Justice4SmileyC

Big thanks goes to Lime Magazine who published an article I put together shortly after Smiley Culture’s death.

From my part it was written as a fan, it also had contributions from Smiley Culture’s family & colleagues.

NEOSOUL3rdFRIDAYs – London’s Dedicated Neo-Soul Monthly Club Night Event – Thank You

NEOSOUL3rdFRIDAYs – London’s Dedicated Neo-Soul Monthly Club Night Event – Thank You

Tonight – Friday January 21st 2011 marks the first “Neo-Soul-3rd-Fridays” event of 2011. We enter our 3rd year runnig this Neo-Soul monthly theme, as of January 2011 Hobgoblin is under new management – so please continue to show by your attendance these specialist Neo-Soul nights are important to you.

If you’ve never been to Hobgoblin Angel N1 – it’s a friendly, laid back place with a very mixed crowd – there’s a few photos in this page from previous NS3Fs events that will give you an idea of the place

A big thanks to all those who’ve supported this specialist, new music night and to the artists for their great musical input. If you’re around in London tonight please do join us if you love Contemporary Soul music and / or are looking for something off the very beaten path of the usual music playlists in London’s club land. It’s free-entry all night, 9pm-2am at Hobgoblin, 73 White Lion Street N1.

“NEOSOUL3rdFRIDAYs” Event Info Updates can be followed via this Facebook event page:  http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=146182768735741&index=1

Here’s some insight behind this club night theme:

REASONS FOR & THOUGHTS BEHIND “NEOSOUL3rdFRIDAYS”:

I am mindful of musical brackets and their limitations and use them as a tool to signpost rather than limit. Although at opposite ends of the tempo spectrum usually Northern Soul & Neo Soul bare the same initial “NS” and their followers share the same enthusiasm, obsession for the search for new (or new to them) sounds. Northern Soul was coined by the then editor of Blues & Soul mag for  London record shop use to describe and signpost the uptempo 60s Soul, often Motown sounding Soul music favoured by the predominantly from North of UK football fans who would record shop on their trips to London. Fast forward to the mid 1990′s and Kedar at Motown signing new 2 new talents: Erykah Badu & D’Angelo. Their music didn’t sound quite how much of the R&B was sounding at that point in time, nor was it a complete retro re-work of 1970s (and before) Soul, necessity and marketing helped Kedar coin the “Neo Soul” term. Both Northern Soul and Neo Soul are as seen made up of many things, not an absolute or perfect-science.  Retrospectively sounds, tempo’s and textures which people gravitate towards at one point in time, or perhaps as a reaction to music they can’t identify with IE heavily autotuned productions or holiday karaoke cover versions ala Ex Factor.

The night’s been running 2 years now, some of the attendances have been packed, some less so, either way – it’s the core attendees who attend regularly who’ve kept this night going and me motivated to continue with it – some of you I’ve tagged in for this reason, others are artists who I play at the night. Others have been tagged in as they have supported and it’s ethos in some way.

“NeoSoul3rdFridays” is part of my weekly “Groove Lineage” Soul Friday night session. Groove Lineage sprang out of a radio show, and it’s idea was to mix it up. When i started the “NeoSoul3rdFridays” theme I did so as I felt it was needed at this point in time in London. Perhaps if I was in the USA right now I would feel it was needed to run a Soulful House night as I have in other era’s here in the UK. Speaking at this point in time right here in the UK, right now – this end of the music needed a platform for the great recordings coming out I felt.

There are more live music outlets for this end of the music, but less club nights heavily playing it. Tempo is a big factor in that, as for substance and wider musical content I feel much of our UK Pop music is in bad shape due to the effects of a vastly shrunk sales-per-unit-music biz & shows like Ex Factor and it’s mindset and approach to music filling the void of what’s left of the music sales, radio, tv and club playlists. & that is another issue – much of our clubs and places to spend night outs are pretty much as play listed as the national syndicated radio stations – all playing the same 100 karaoke favourites again and again. As a musician, writer, dj and music lover – that lack of choice depresses me so is yet more motivation for running this night. Music style and tempo wise it obviously Neo-Soul, downtempo Nu Soul, but there is another agenda in pushing new music generally within that music remit.

When I look back to the 1980s, when i first started buying music to industrial proportions I was aware that the Street Soul artists were like folk-hero figures, hardly ever touching the top 20 charts, not even the top 100 often, but they had strong loyal followings in London, the suburbs and other Uk towns and cities.I.E.: artists like Bobby Womack, Anita Baker. Retrospectively many of these artists and what’s often now described as “Raregrooves” are very much more heard and known about than at that time. As I consider contemporary Soul music now and the “Neo Soul” tag bracket my intuition tells me these artists too will be retrospectively heard more often and given recognition in hindsight. Ironically, and not to be pedantic by that time I guess If I am still about, active in playing music I will be pushing another bracket, another chapter in the Soul music Lineage. Another aim of NeoSoul3rdFridays is to give contemporary artists recognition and plays in the era they made their music.

Musically running these nights have been fulfilling for me, inc. support, recognition and official release parties for some great acts like Erykah Badu, Eric Roberson, Dwele, Sade, Carmen Rodgers, The Foreign Exchange, also representing some great homegrown UKSoul music also.

That’s where I am so far with NeoSoul3rdFridays,

Thanks for all your support enthusiasm and great music – this specialist night really does need it as the uphill struggle against the current music and nightlife status-quo can sometimes feel near vertical.

The first NeoSoul3rdFridays of 2011 is tonight – Friday January 21st 2011, then we resume “NS3Fs” monthly theme once again on Friday February 18th 2011.
